BAA Profile Portrait Demo Fin Crop 7-15-2020
Julie1Crop.jpg

Course Description: This is an intermediate course with emphasis on classical drawing technique. With the current health crisis, students will be working from high resolution portrait photos of professional models, muscular and skeletal anatomy charts and plaster casts in every session, supplied by the Academy. The course will be taught Synchronously via Zoom, with direct feedback, critique and demonstrations daily.

Starting with a review of the structure, proportions, basic facial muscles and features, the course will quickly cover different methods of “blocking in” to establish an accurate likeness and sense of character. The majority of the course will focus on creating an emotional narrative content in your portrait work. There will a high level of one-on-one time and attention from the instructor given the online Zoom Format.

Students must have a computer/tablet with the current version of Zoom. It is also recommended to have a second device (smart phone/tablet) for a two camera setup.

Course Description: Learn to make better pictures, and take control of your camera. We’ll begin by discussing and demystifying the “basic” controls on your camera, including but not limited to: aperture, shutter speed, ISO, exposure and exposure compensation, the histogram, color temperature, lens focus and the ‘rules’ of general composition. Building on this set of fundamentals, we’ll explore a variety of subjects and approaches including the portrait, landscape and simple still life arrangement.

Classes will be a combination of a short instructional lecture; question and answer follow up, as well as informal group critiques to share the pictures everyone is making.  Some short readings will be included to inspire your eyes and spark conversation. This course is generally designed for photographers using so called DSLR or mirror-less cameras, but will accommodate makers using the iPhone or equivalent with only a few limitations. No software is required, though basic image editing using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom will be discussed. Students will leave this class with better understandings of their camera as a flexible tool for creative expression, or for recording their everyday life.
