Narrative: Offered for all skill levels. This course is an introduction to the history and methods of narrative image-making and illustration, from the earliest forms of cave painting to reproduction for newspapers, through the “Golden Age of American Illustration” and up to the present. The information will be gathered through lectures, group discussions, research and studio work. Assignments will range from producing pages for a graphic novel, book cover illustrations and editorial spots to propaganda posters and sequential presentations. The materials used will be completely up to each student, geared to individual preference and tailored to each assignment. From pen and ink to digital photo-collage, anything goes. This is a perfect course to bridge the gap between fine and commercial art and will prepare the student for a multitude of career options and possibilities, from animation, storyboard art and children’s book illustration to narrative figure painting and sculpture. Studying a wide range of pictorial storytelling, concepts and, techniques, all students will benefit, from career artists to those interested in narrative image making for personal enrichment.
