Course Description: This course is an introduction to the history and methods of narrative image making and illustration. Beginning from the earliest forms of cave painting through the “Golden Age of American Illustration” and up to the present, this course includes lectures, group discussions, research and studio work. Assignments will range from producing pages for a graphic novel, book cover illustrations and editorial spots to propaganda posters and sequential presentations. This is a perfect course to bridge the gap between fine art and commercial art which will prepare the student for a multitude of career options  from animation, storyboard art and children's book illustration to narrative figure painting and sculpture. All students will benefit, from career artists to those interested in narrative image making for personal enrichment.

Beginning Oil Painting

Illustration: Narrative Image Making

Course Description: This is the first course in a sequence of oil painting classes offered to any student at any level. This class is a complete introduction to everything a student needs to know about oil painting! Topics covered include: materials, equipment, studio setup, cleanup and safety. We will cover color theory and color mixing, using a limited palette, dead palette and a prismatic triad / full palette. Students will learn indirect painting technique (glazing and scumbling), direct painting technique (alla prima), painting from observation and painting from photographs. Students will work with light, value, chromatic value and compsition. They will learn how to draw with paint, control edges as well as how to introduce narrative and emotion into their work. This class incorporates personal and group critiques, presentations of relevant artists, live demonstrations and ample one-on-one time from the instructor.

Course Description: This is a foundational course with emphasis on classical observational drawing from life and the development of traditional, fundamental through intermediate techniques. Drawing from still lifes and plaster casts, students of any skill level will develop abilities in sight sizing and measuring as well as traditional techniques in linear depiction and full achromatic (black & white) value rendering with graphite, charcoal and Conte.  This course is a crucial part of the foundation for all further study in the visual arts. From students focused on observational realism to those interested in abstract imagery, all will benefit. Given the nature of the material covered and the instructor’s approach, studentsi often take this course multiple times.

Topics Covered Will Be: Contour Line (Blind Contour, Cross Contour), Negative and Positive Shapes, Basic One-, Two-, Three-, and Multi-Point Linear Perspective, Value and Tonal Drawing with Volume, Mass, Weight, Edge Variation and Atmosphere.
